Radiation Oncology is the use of radiation to treat cancer. Your radiation treatment uses high energy X-ray beams to treat cancer cells. Tumor cells reproduce more quickly than normal cells. Radiation treatment destroys the DNA of the cancer cell so it cannot grow. If the cancer cell cannot divide, it cannot grow or survive. Sometimes a small amount of normal or healthy tissue is in the treatment field. Healthy cells regenerate quickly.
The Radiation Oncology Team includes many highly skilled professionals who work together to provide the best treatment plan for the patient. The team includes:
- Radiation Oncologist:
The radiation oncologist is a Board Certified physician who specializes in radiation oncology. He or she oversees your care as well as develops and prescribes your treatment plan.
- Registered Nurse:
The radiation oncology nurse plays a key role. The radiation oncology nurse works in a collaborative role with the radiation oncologist. The nurse supports the patient during and after treatment focusing on side-effect management, patient education, along with emotional support.
- Radiation Therapist:
The radiation therapist administers the radiation treatment while maintaining and recording treatments administered. This is all done in accordance to the physician's prescription.
- Dosimetrist:
The dosimetrist works closely with the radiation oncologist developing each patient's treatment plan and calculating the treatment dose, developing plans to ensure that the tumor receives the highest dose of radiation possible while sparing as much normal tissue surrounding the tumor as possible.
- Physicist:
The physicist works closely with the physician and dosimetrist developing the patient's treatment plan. They are also responsible for maintaining the treatment machines.
- Supervisor of Radiation Therapy:
