ECT is a modernized and effective treatment for victims of severe or treatment-resistant depression and for some patients with mania or schizophrenia. ECT is administered under general anesthesia with supervision by an anesthesiologist, a psychiatrist and an RN.
An evaluation with a ECT-trained psychiatrist and primary care physician determines if a patient is a candidate for ECT treatment. Patient and family education about ECT and psychiatric illness is also provided.
