Mike Baumer of Centerville has been selected as Reid Hospital’s May Volunteer of the Month. Mike has served at the Information Desk Since January 2011. He was cited for going above and beyond in helping staff, patients and guests. He sees what needs to be done and then does it, nominators said, noting Mike always has a smile and is always willing to work a shift for others.
A graduate of Marian College (now Marian University) and Ball State University, Mike taught 5th and 6th grades at Centerville-Abington and retired after 37 years. He still coaches the school’s baseball team. He also works as the summer groundskeeper for the school and the town library.
Mike is married to Kathie and has four sons, three grandsons—plus another due in July. They enjoy traveling to New York City and Minneapolis to visit their sons. They have also traveled to Europe and would like to return on a future trip. He likes gardening, sports, volunteering with Easter Seals and spending time with their two dogs, a Siberian husky and a Heinz 57 mutt. He is a member of the St. Elizabeth Church in Cambridge City.
Mike thoroughly enjoys volunteering at Reid. “It is nice meeting new people and seeing many I already know,” he said.
