January volunteer creates friendly, welcoming atmosphere (1-11-2013)January’s Volunteer of Month, Betsy Lakes, has contributed her time to Reid since 2009. Betsy is assigned to the Information Desk, where she greets visitors and patients. She helps them get to their destination for appointments or to visit patients. Betsy also helps with gathering wheelchairs, answering the phone and many other tasks that arise. She can always be counted on to help cover shifts other than her regular Wednesday afternoon when others are unable to come in.
December volunteer completes a special trio (12-14-2012)Reid’s December Volunteer of Month, Becky Leith, has been helping with special assignments for over three years. She often assists with various projects and events, most recently prostate screening registration, Chamber Career Day and sewing Christmas stockings for Reid’s December newborns. She also helps with preparing mailings, cutting fabric for baby blankets, organizing donated magazines and other assorted tasks. Becky frequently works with two other volunteers, Emily Wise and Evelene Lantz, and they have been dubbed “the three musketeers.”
November volunteer rides through life with golden wings (11-2-2012)Reid’s November Volunteer of Month, Emily Wise, has been helping with special assignments for over eight years. She often assists with various projects and events, most recently prostate screening registration and preparations for Reid’s Humanity in Medicine dinner. She also helps with preparing mailings, cutting fabric for baby blankets, organizing donated magazines and other assorted tasks. Emily has frequently made coasters for special holidays that are used on patient trays. She usually works with two other volunteers, Evelene Lantz and Becky Leith, and they have been dubbed “the three musketeers.”
October volunteer specializes in special assignments (10-5-2012)Reid’s October Volunteer of Month, Evelene Lantz, has been helping with special assignments for over eight years. She often assists with various projects and events, most recently prostrate screening registration and preparations for Reid’s Humanity in Medicine dinner. She also helps with preparing mailings, cutting fabric for baby blankets, organizing donated magazines and other assorted tasks. September volunteer provides good information (9-7-2012)Seven year Reid information desk volunteer Janet Richardson has been named the Volunteer of the Month for September. Janet has been greeting guests and answering questions at this post since 2005.
August volunteer is experienced at excelling (8-10-2012)Joyce White has been named Reid Hospital’s August volunteer of the month. Retired from Elder Beerman, Joyce has a history of being recognized for outstanding service. While working as a department manager at Elder Beerman, she was awarded volunteer of the month three times. She has volunteered at Reid for nearly five years, primarily in the Medical Education department. Joyce was recruited by her daughter, Lynda McClelland, who is the coordinator for that area. Joyce helps keep the physician mail boxes—over 120, in order and works on mailings for the office. She also enjoys helping with the various auxiliary fundraisers.
July Volunteer doesn’t just fiddle around (7-13-2012)The July Volunteer of the Month, Laara Delain loves to share her passion for music with Reid’s patients. A violinist, Laara has been providing music therapy at Reid since July 2011. Laara taught high school music for 40 years before coming to Richmond and to Reid. She saw a need for music therapy and offered to provide that service. Nursing units arrange for Laara to play for individual patients and she also plays in the group areas of a couple of units.
June Volunteer: Mike Pappin (6-1-2012)Mike Pappin, the June volunteer of the month, has been sharing his time and skills in the Joint & Spine Center since its inception in 2010. Mike was selected for his friendliness and helpfulness to patients and their families. Also cited, is his enthusiasm about his role as a volunteer. Mike is very reliable and can be counted on to work past his shift when the unit is extra busy.
May volunteer (5-4-2012)Mike Baumer of Centerville has been selected as Reid Hospital’s May Volunteer of the Month. Mike has served at the Information Desk Since January 2011. He was cited for going above and beyond in helping staff, patients and guests. He sees what needs to be done and then does it, nominators said, noting Mike always has a smile and is always willing to work a shift for others.
April volunteer (4-6-2012)Ronn Berry has been selected as Reid Hospital’s April Volunteer of the Month. Ronn has served as an Information Desk volunteer for seven years. He is cited for his professional personality and helpfulness to patients, staff and guests. He has been instrumental in arranging monthly meetings for the Information Desk staff and assisting with other special projects. Even though Ronn lives in the Fountain City area, he calls in during bad weather to make sure all shifts are covered and to offer his help.
