Vascular Surgeon Named 2007 Humanity in Medicine Laureate at Reid Hospital

William DuceyRichmond vascular surgeon William Ducey, M.D., is the 2007 Paul S. Rhoads Humanity in Medicine award winner at Reid Hospital & Health Care Services. He accepted the award Friday evening during the hospital’s annual medical staff appreciation reception.

The Humanity in Medicine prize honors a career distinguished by compassionate care for patients and their families as well as effective support for the area’s health care community. Nominations for Rhoads awards are solicited in late summer from physicians, patients, health care workers and anyone who resides in the Indiana and Ohio counties served by Reid. An evaluation board selects the physician based on the nominations and service of the physician. This year, Dr. Ducey was selected from among 33 Reid physicians who received nominations.

The 2007 winner joined Reid’s medical staff in 1987 when he came to Richmond and joined General Surgeons, Inc.. Dr. Ducey was born and grew up in Chicago.

Dr. Ducey completed his undergraduate work at Washington University in St. Louis in 1977.  He earned his medical degree in 1981 from The Chicago Medical School, North Chicago followed by an internship and residency at Loyola University of Chicago. Dr. Ducey completed a fellowship in peripheral vascular surgery at St. Anthony Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

Dr. Ducey is board certified by the American Board of Surgery.

Nominators praised Dr. Ducey for his caring, compassion and honest approach in dealing with patients. One colleague nominator called him a great teacher for staff and patients whose sense of humor and smiling attitude had a positive impact on others.

One physician colleague said: “He is always precise, practical, reliable and is well-liked by patients and colleagues.”

At Reid, Dr. Ducey serves as a panel physician for Wound Healing Services and has been medical advisor for 20 years to Reid’s vascular laboratory. From 1992-1996 and 2004 to the present Dr. Ducey has been chief of the surgery section and a member of the Medical Staff Executive Committee. Also, he has been president since 2003 of Richmond Physician Services and is currently the inpatient director for the hospital’s surgery joint venture with physicians.

Dr. Ducey’s affiliations include Wayne County and Indiana State Medical societies, the American Medical Association and the American Board of Surgery. He is a fellow in the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Ducey, and his wife, Leslie, are parents of three children, Joe, Kate and Alex.
In his spare time, Dr. Ducey enjoys woodworking and computers as hobbies.
The Humanity in Medicine award and celebration, authorized as an annual event by Reid’s governing board in 1983, honors the memory of Paul S. Rhoads, M.D., for his services to patients and medicine.
