Centerville-area resident Jane Lucas has accrued the honor of Volunteer of the Month for August at Reid Hospital & Health Care Services.
Lucas, a volunteer since September 2002, helps staff Reid’s information desk in the main lobby.
“Jane admits to having passed by other chances for volunteer service,” wrote one of her colleagues. “She always says she’s not going to give up Reid.”
“She obviously loves working at Reid and being part of our public face,” reads one nomination. “Just as obviously, she loves helping people.”
Another nominator recalled how Lucas sat with the confused wife of a surgical patient until a family member, once reached, could arrive at the hospital.
“I’m overwhelmed with this nomination,” Lucas said. “It’s such an honor.”
Lucas, who retired in 2000 after 25 years as food service director for Centerville-Abington schools, does volunteer at Area 9 and serves on the board of directors of the Centerville senior center. She is a member of Abington Christian Church, which she has served for many years as organist, pianist and keyboardist as well as treasurer.
In 2001, the Centerville Lions Club selected Lucas as its person of the year.
Her hobbies include yard work, flowers and music as well as indulging three children, 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
