November Volunteer heartens heart patients

Gary ManningAs a former heart patient, the November Volunteer of the Month at Reid Hospital & Health Care Services can empathize with and is more than qualified to assure the patients he helps tend in Surgery, ICU and the OCC.

“He’s a wonderful ambassador for our open heart program,” notes one nominator. “He is always willing to take on any task we ask of him.”

According to another comment, “He reassures our patients in a way the nursing staff cannot because we haven’t been where the patient is. Gary has.”

Gary Manning, retired from Meyers Mechanical Corp. and two years into his efforts as a Reid volunteer, indicated he was pleased by the award.

“With the caliber of our volunteers and their devotion, it’s a very high honor,” he said, adding, “Our staff is excellent to work with.”

Manning also serves St. Paul’s Lutheran Church as congregational president. His wife, Janet, teaches at Randolph Southern Elementary School. They’re the parents of Matthew and Kerri.
