Community Health Education
Community Health Education focuses on improving the health of the communities Reid serves. To direct our efforts where the need is greatest, however, we must first determine those needs.
The following four health priorities were identified based on the Community Needs Assessment completed in 2007:
- Obesity/Lack of Physical Activity
- Chronic Lung Disease/Asthma
- Stress/Depression
- Cardiac Indicators- Elevated Blood Pressure & Cholesterol

Health Needs Assessment
For many years, Reid Hospital has made a commitment to community health and wellness. In 2007, Reid's community benefit expenditures totaled more than $387,459. This included programs ranging from no-charge mammograms to a variety of wellness-oriented education programs offered throughout the communities we serve. Reid spent $26,855,655 to subsidize Medicaid and $6,684,030 to pay for Charity Care. In addition, Reid spent $134,627,828 in Medicare subsidies and $20,460,571 on Bad Debt. Reid's total benefit to the community for 2007 was over $189 million.
Reid's Community Benefit programs include:
- Community Benefit Grant Program - More than $92,263 was spent in 2007 on a variety of health-related projects throughout the community. These grants are targeted to the identified health priorities.
- Employee Community Service Grant - This program sets asides funds for Reid employees to contribute time to a variety of health-related activities. Employees may schedule this time to work on approved projects and be paid for the hours worked through Community Benefit funds.
- The Sara Ronald Care Fund - This fund allows Reid employees to access funds for items or expenses on an emergency basis to meet the needs of patients and their families such as patient care, meals, transportation or medications. Reid spent $7,660 in 2007 in this fund.
- No-charge Mammogram/PSA Program - The goal of this program is to ensure than no one go without a needed mammogram or PSA (prostate specific antigen) test because they can not afford one. Physicians can refer patients to this program, who have no means to pay for the service otherwise. In 2007, Reid Hospital provided $10,122 no-charge mammograms and $730 for PSA.
- Health Ministries Program – This program delivers health information and education to area churches and other organizations at no cost. In 2007, Reid’s Health Ministries Program had 72 participants.
- Community Health Education/Reid Health Partnerships - This program provides the services of a community health educator whose focus is on healthy lifestyle choices. The nurse-educator conducts health screenings, presents educational sessions in schools and other settings and works to keep the public informed on health, safety and wellness topics.
