Rita Settle

Born with hydrocephalus and holes on the top and bottom of her heart, Rita spent the first years of her life in and out of surgery.

A Richmond resident since 2004, Rita has spent the past four years participating in weekly physical and occupational therapy exercises at Reid's outpatient rehab services.

During that time, Rita learned to use scissors, write, improve her reaction time and latest accomplishment – tie her shoes.

"Leanne Louge (Reid Occupational Therapist), my mom and I would have shoe tying parties for Rita – we'd do anything to help her learn," said Rita's mother, Misti.

Misti said Reid's staff has become extended family.  "It's like Rita has a bunch of moms looking out for her and trying to help and teach her.  They've had a hand in raising her too, and I appreciate what they do for us."

"When you are the parent of a special needs child, you don't always know what to do or where to go.  But it's nice when you have someone you know and trust who can be that extra support to give ideas or listen.  That's what Reid has given me and Rita," Misti said.
