Maurice Hurd

After recovering from extensive heart surgery, Maurice Hurd, also a diabetic, began working through the Reid cardiac rehabilitation program where staff and other heart patients soon became family.

One day in particular, Maurice planned to take the bus to the hospital for rehab when he became disoriented and struggled finding the correct bus.  Finally arriving at Reid, he knew his sugar level was low and headed straight to the gift shop for some candy.  However, on his way to rehabilitation, Maurice fell on the floor and was unable to get up.

"When I looked around, at first I couldn't see anyone.  Then a construction worker came to help and took me to rehab," Maurice explained.  "I always knew the people at Reid were friendly, but when even a construction worker would take the time to help me, I knew I was in a special place."

Following the doctor's orders, the rehab staff kept Maurice until they knew he was ready to go home.  Unfortunately he would not be able to catch a bus, so some of his new friends and fellow heart patients gave him a ride home.

Now, months later, Maurice is proud to tell these new friends that Dr. Kuhn says he has the "strongest heart he's ever seen."
