Easing a New Mom’s Worries

Liam Kennedy was a beautiful newborn with just one problem: jaundice. This condition, which is caused by high levels of bilirubin in the blood, is common at birth. Babies with jaundice often have a yellowish tint to their skin and the whites of their eyes. The condition usually disappears on its own, but serious cases can lead to brain damage if left untreated.

Liam’s doctor prescribed at-home phototherapy, which would involve placing the baby under special lights to break down the bilirubin. “A nurse called to say that someone from Reid Hospital would be in touch about renting a phototherapy unit,” says Mindy Kennedy, Liam’s mom. “I started worrying. Reid is 50 minutes from my house—was I going to have to drive all that way? Five minutes later, Reid@Home called me to set up a delivery.”

Within just a few hours, a Reid@Home deliveryman was knocking on Mindy’s door. “It was kind of hectic at my house because my grandparents, niece and nephew were visiting,” recalls Mindy. “But that didn’t bother Dan at all. We went upstairs to Liam’s room, and he showed me how to use the unit. It turned out that one of his kids had had jaundice, too, so he was really reassuring that everything was going to be OK.”

After answering all of Mindy’s questions, Dan left. “The light worked just like Dan said it would and within a week Liam’s jaundice was gone,” Mindy says. “I called Reid@Home to let them know we didn’t need the unit anymore, and someone came to pick it up. It was all really convenient and easy.”
