Valentine Men

Three Valentine men share a Reid Hospital heart connection

John, Eric and Dan Valentine of Connersville share a family history, a sense of humor — and very recent experiences as Reid Hospital heart surgery patients. Two of them even had bypass procedures on the same day.

The Valentine’s Reid connection began in February 2011, when John, age 53, came to his family physician complaining of fatigue and difficulty breathing. She sent him for a cardiac catheterization that identified four major blockages in his arteries. Within the week, he underwent quadruple bypass surgery at Reid Hospital in Richmond.

Meanwhile, John’s 43-year-old brother, Eric, was experiencing heart problems of his own. “I’d been having chest pain for about a year and a half, and was on medication for high blood pressure and high cholesterol,” he says. “About eleven weeks after John’s surgery, my nurse practitioner sent me for a stress test and cardiac catheterization. The next thing you know I’m having triple bypass surgery at Reid Hospital.”

Unbeknownst to Eric and John, their uncle Dan was at Reid as well — recovering from a quadruple bypass that took place just hours after Eric’s surgery.

“The care I received was seamless and top of the line,” says Dan, age 58. “I’ve read that Reid’s heart surgery program is ranked in the top 13 percent nationally. To have that right here in Richmond — that’s something to be proud of.”

All three men speak very highly of Dr. E. Paul Howanitz, the Reid cardiac surgeon who saved their lives. “It’s amazing to me that Dr. Howanitz held each of our hearts in his hands within a two-month period,” says John. “He is very dedicated, and the kind of person you can trust to do his job well.”

Following surgery, all three men completed their 12-week cardiac rehabilitation program. They have since returned to their busy lives, but plan to reunite every Thanksgiving to commemorate their connection as Reid heart patients.

“I hope I never see the cardiac surgery team at Reid again,” jokes Dan. “But if I have to, I’ll be at ease. They became like family to me real quick.”

Reid cardiologists see patients at Whitewater Valley Medical Center, 1475 E. State Road 44 in Connersville. To make an appointment, please call (765) 827-5690.
